Why its great: It's a proper gothic haunted house story all atmosphere and creeping dread, even before the twist is revealed. Have you ever noticed that, despite the name, there is often a conspicuous absence of fairies in fairy tales? It leans into and gathers strength from its own perversion in scenes that approximate reality before throwing the audience headlong into a world of insanity when things take a turn for the supernatural.

Powerlessness -- loss of control -- is a central theme of the horror story, and who hasn't felt powerless?

These were originally published in anthology magazines like Garo (1964-2002) and Kage (“Shadow,” founded 1956), but they even have a current descendent in the underground comics anthology Ax (founded 1998, vol. 1 out in English ). As much as Murphy may want viewers to believe there’s been a clear plot map since season one, that there’s “definitely a rhyme or a reason and a connectedness to all of these seasons,” it’s becoming increasingly obvious that the writers are just repeatedly riffing on the oddities that interest them most, producing television in the same way as that kid who keeps reworking one well-written term paper for each subsequent composition class.

While people leap at the chance to point at the first two Creepshow films as apex moments for anthologies, I’d argue tooth and nail that The Twilight Zone is a superior film. A single viewing of this ghost story will also render the hurdy-gurdy sinister for ever more. Any of the stories from the far-less-than-prolific Klein that were published in Dark Gods (a must-read) or the story that became his novel The Ceremonies, “The Events at Poroth’s Farm” would qualify, but this is marginally my favorite of them.
