It is known as the Mycenaean culture after the city of Mycenae. The new Athenian leaders, Pericles and Ephialtes, let relations between Athens and Sparta deteriorate, and in 458 BC war broke out. Irrigation works were often needed which required leadership perhaps leading to the creation of the first states. A religious festival held in honour of Zeus, attended by people from all over Greece. The artists who competed gave Polyclitus the verdict over Phidias and Kresilas, and on that basis modern criticism rather fruitlessly endeavours to attribute the wounded Amazons in our museums to one or other of those sculptors.

Later on, they were frequently set in groups on the sides of the marble public benches called exedrae. An estimated one-third of Athenians died, including Pericles, their leader. For instance, when a book shows a photograph of Diskobolos by Myron, the lay reader is not always aware that this is not the 5th-century bronze made by the sculptor himself. but one of several marble copies made five or six centuries later. Perhaps because it does not have the prestige of the 1st Dynasty, or the great monuments built during the 3rd Dynasy, Egypt's 2nd Dynasty seems almost an interlude.
