The ragtime craze in America had passed, and Joplin's popularity had waned to such an extent that a number of his unpublished compositions remained hidden away in the Stark company files and were eventually destroyed when the operation moved in 1935. Whiteman's band was larger than Hickman's and used the talented composer-arranger Ferde Grofe as well as top-flight instrumentalists. As a reward for his invaluable contribution to the development of the art of guitar and commitment to his music, the Georgian President, Edward Shevardnadze, awarded Temur Kvitelashvili with "The Order of Honor" in 1998.
