James was the first, but not the only commentator on abolition to see a nascent industrial capitalism as the implacable force behind this momentous shift from old to new society. One might expect the NIV Study Bible, at least, to indicate the meaning, but even in that copiously annotated edition of the NIV there is no explanatory note here. Slavery was formally outlawed by the Thirteenth Amendment in December 1865. Almost 30,000 amputations took place due to battlefield injuries, according to statistics kept by the Army Medical Museum.
