They were the first such murals found at Teotihuacán, and the figures and color were spectacular. Dr. Antonio Peñafiel, a Mexican scholar, recognizing the importance of the paintings and their fragility—they were already badly mutilated— made color tracings and photographs of the four main portions. He also made separate tracings of various elements in the other mural fragments. Precisely when and how Adela became involved in working on copying the frescoes is not clear. Her itinerary shows her at San Martín, which is by Teopancaxco, in September 1894.

Lloyd Morgan, August 24, 1899 Adela was away from England during much of the late 1890s. She had traveled over most of central, south, and west Mexico, thoroughly covering the central area of Mexico in particular. She had spent little time in the north except passing through on the train, and she had not yet traveled to Yucatán or the far southeastern area of Mexico. In the course of these travels she accumulated a substantial amount of artifacts and objects as well as samples of obsidian. 1 At that time the BRLSI had a large and impressive building to house its collections, library, and meeting space.

If it were an archaeological structure she would show it in its surroundings, particularly if it were amidst vegetation. Her paintings show a strong sense of composition. In some respects these paintings are reminiscent of Frederick Catherwood’s paintings. 1 That 1894 trip represented a break with her old life centered on England. Her earlier trips had lasted for several months and provided an escape from the damp Bath winters.
