The 6th foreign Congress on Photosynthesis came about from 1 to six August 1983, at the Campus of the "Vrije Universiteit Brussel", in Brussels, Belgium. those court cases include many of the clinical contributions provided through the Congress. The Brussels Congress used to be the biggest to date held within the sequence of foreign Congresses on Photosynthesis. It counted over 1100 energetic contributors. The organizers attempted to reduce the dangers of this kind of huge measurement by way of making greatest use of the facili ties on hand on a college campus. so much contributions have been provided within the type of posters which have been displayed in a considerable variety of study rooms. The dialogue periods, two times an afternoon, 4 or 5 in parallel, came about in classrooms within the very area of those study rooms. during this means it used to be tried to generate the ambience of a small assembly. The cohesion of the topic Photosynthesis used to be preserved within the ten plenary lectures, organ~sed in this type of manner normal evaluation of 2 diversified themes used to be given each day. additionally, there have been the 5 instances 4 parallel symposia facing a few six teenager common subject matters. each editor of complaints of a congress is confronted with the matter of modifying and arranging the contributions, an issue compounded by way of the broad variety and the big variety of the 753 manuscripts.

This would appear to be in agreement with the "inhibitor-plastoquinone competition model" proposed by Velthuys (1981) and supported by Lavergne {1982 a). Accordinq to this model the plastosemiquinone PQ- binds strongly to the inhibitor binding site and is only slowly displaced by the inhibitor. Displacement of the plastoquinone is monitored via the fluorescence change accompanying the electron shift on Q: Q•PQ- + I ~ Q-;,I + PQ At low pH, upon protonation of the semiquinone anion. its displacement by the inhibitor may be further impeded.

Thus, an explanation of a Q--induced increase of the i-dinoseb affinity is not likely to hold. A possible explanation is to assume an i-dinoseb binding which does not necessarily exclude binding of PQ, but changes the redox potential of the B/B- couple, yielding inhibition of Q- oxidation (a non-mutually-exclusive binding of a quinone and ioxynil has been suggested; Vermaas et al. 1983). Then, no large dependence of i-dinoseb affinity on the redox-states of the quinones is necessary. Another possibility to explain the i-dinoseb results is that the assumptions on which the calculations are based are not fulfilled in the case of i-dinoseb (for example, the exchange parameters may change during tne flash train due to changes in the redox state of PQ).

Without going into details, we tend to conclude th~t the observed differences can be traced back to variations in the relative amount of "non-B type centers" (Lavergne 1982 b) in "winter spinach" and "summer spinach" chloroplasts (used for the present study).
